Algerian East West Motorway forms part of the larger Trans-Maghreb Motorway project, which will link Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. This motorway will be 2x3 lane, an overall distance of over 1,000kms and built to European standards. The road has been divided into three sections; East, Central, and West. For each section, a design and build contract has been awarded with an overall contract period of 40 months.
The scale of the project in terms of length and requirements (i.e. almost 200 major structures of up to 550 meters) makes this a challenging project to be completed within a very tight time frame.
A group of five Japanese construction companies (Itochu, Kajima Corp., Taisei Corp., Nishimatsu Construction Co., and Hazama Corp.) formed the joint venture COJAAL – Consortium Japonais pour l’Autoroute Algerienne – to build this project for the citizens of Algeria.
